Russell Moore, writing in his newsletter, reflects on the late writer Wendell Berry, whom Moore says shaped his life and thought more than any other writer. ^[1] Drumgoole recalled reading an excerpt from Wendell Berry's novel 'Jayber Crow' during her final college course on living a meaningful life. ^[2] Kristen Drumgoole, a child and family therapist, stated that she cried multiple times upon learning of the death of author Wendell Berry. ^[3] Since June, Drumgoole has spent time tending two tiny garden beds with her children, growing snap peas, lettuce, tomatoes, kale, and carrots. ^[4] The author stated she aims to honor Wendell Berry's admonition to 'practice resurrection' by tending a garden, knowing neighbors, and alleviating human suffering. ^[5] Berry argued that an overemphasis on the spirituality of the eternal leads to viewing creation as 'the environment' and land as 'natural resources', deforming human beings and causing a crisis of meaning. ^[6] Moore argues that the predatory use of the gospel is often a Machiavellian strategy for this-worldly power, and that such heaven talk is not too mystical but not mystical enough. ^[7] Moore recalls Berry, a Baptist Christian, criticizing preachers who used heaven as a 'bogus mysticism' to secure eternal bliss without giving up temporal vice, and who supported a Jim Crow racist police state. ^[8]
