A flood on 26 August 2026 devastated the border complexes at Gyirong on the Chinese side and Rasuwagadhi in Nepal, sweeping away the Friendship Bridge and destroying Nepal's immigration and customs facilities. ^[1] A massive flash flood swept through the Rasuwagadhi border crossing between Nepal and China, destroying buildings, vehicles, and infrastructure. ^[2] Electronic records from Nepal's Department of Immigration show that 89 Nepali and foreign nationals had cleared immigration to leave Nepal for Tibet on the morning of 26 August 2026, and four had registered entry, with the final transaction recorded at 8:35:03am local time. ^[3] India's foreign ministry said on 26 August 2026 that at least 275 Indians remain missing in Nepal after the flood that hit the Rasuwagadhi border crossing. ^[4] Tika Ram Pokharel, a senior immigration assistant at Rasuwagadhi and the only known survivor from his office, estimated that 2,000 to 2,500 people may have been caught in the flood, a figure that has not been independently verified. ^[5] Researchers attributed the flood to a partial glacier collapse triggered by seismic activity detected by Nepal's Hydrology and Water Resources Research Centre. ^[6] Tika Ram Pokharel, the sole surviving immigration officer from Rasuwagadhi, stated that the crossing was unusually crowded when the floods arrived. ^[7]
