In a separate experiment where mice received the drug until the end of their lives, the median lifespan of the treated group was nearly 100 days longer than the control group. ^[1] Scientists published research in the journal Nature stating that semaglutide, a drug widely used for diabetes and obesity, extended the lifespan of elderly healthy mice and weakened age-related changes in the body. ^[2] Researchers at the University of California, Berkeley, published a study in the journal Nature on 2026-01-01 (inferred from DOI year) showing that late-life semaglutide treatment slowed age-related decline and extended lifespan in aged female mice. ^[3] Novo Nordisk, a Danish pharmaceutical company, launched a daily pill version of Wegovy in the United States in January. ^[4] The primary US patent for semaglutida, the active ingredient in Wegovy, is set to expire, causing investor concern. ^[5] Gene activity analysis revealed that the drug weakened characteristic signs of aging, including chronic inflammation and reduced tissue regeneration capacity. ^[6] Researchers administered semaglutide to 20-month-old female mice, and after three months, the animals showed improved muscle function and cognitive abilities. ^[7] The study found that semaglutide treatment reduced food intake by 24% and body weight, primarily by reducing fat mass, in the aged female mice. ^[8] The study revealed that semaglutide treatment improved indicators of hematopoietic stem-cell function, increased neurogenesis in the hippocampus, and reduced age-related inflammation and cellular senescence. ^[9] Investors in Novo Nordisk have not been impressed by the sales figures and remain nervous about the company's future. ^[10] More than 1.5 million people, mostly in the United States, have started taking the daily Wegovy pill since its market release. ^[11]
