According to results presented at ESC Congress 2026, the primary endpoint-a composite of all-cause mortality, pulmonary embolism recurrence, or cardiorespiratory decompensation/collapse within seven days-occurred in 0.7% of patients receiving catheter-directed thrombolysis versus 6.8% receiving standard anticoagulation alone (relative risk 0.10, 95% CI 0.02-0.44, p<0.001). ^[1] Scientists from the Department of Organic Chemistry at the Faculty of Science, Charles University, Prague, reported a new method for synthesizing complex molecules in the journal Organic Letters. ^[2] The PRAGUE-26 study, led by Viktor Kočka and Josef Kroupa from Charles University and University Hospital Kralovske Vinohrady in Prague, Czechia, randomized 558 patients with intermediate-high-risk pulmonary embolism at 11 Czech sites to receive either catheter-directed thrombolysis or standard anticoagulation therapy alone. ^[3] The study reported no significant difference in bleeding events within seven days between the catheter-directed thrombolysis group (4.6%) and the standard-care group (5.0%, p=0.846). ^[4] A team led by Eliška Matoušová designed and tested an elegant three-step process that significantly reduces problems associated with previous synthesis methods. ^[5] Galiellalactone, a compound isolated from the fungus Galiella rufa, affects the signaling protein STAT3 and is being studied for treating chemotherapy-resistant prostate cancer. ^[6] The new method simplifies the preparation of complex molecules related to natural compounds known for anticancer and anti-inflammatory effects. ^[7] The Czech Crown Jewels will be exhibited in the Vladislav Hall of Prague Castle from September 19 to 28, 2026, commemorating 500 years since Ferdinand I Habsburg ascended the throne. ^[8] The National Heritage Institute (NPÚ) will open selected state castles, palaces, and monasteries across the Czech Republic for free on Sunday, September 27, 2026, requiring advance online reservations. ^[9] The Prague 10 Science Festival will take place on Saturday, September 12, 2026, at Gutovka with 25 stations featuring chemistry experiments, LEGO robotics, and nature activities. ^[10] Universities and research institutes, including the Czech Technical University and Charles University, will open their doors to the public on Friday, September 25, 2026, for free science shows and lectures. ^[11]
