NCI funded nearly 350 new grants investigating obesity and cancer between fiscal years 2015 and 2022. ^[1] Researchers at Vanderbilt University published a study in Frontiers in Endocrinology explaining why breakfast is critical for glucose regulation, particularly for adults with diabetes. ^[2] Researchers traced the liver's inability to store glucose to lower levels of glucokinase, the enzyme that helps the liver capture and store sugar. ^[3] The findings suggest that glucagon plays a larger role in the second-meal effect than previously thought, influencing glucose regulation long after a meal has ended. ^[4] The study found that when glucagon levels are elevated in the morning, the liver struggles to store glucose at the next meal, continuing to release it into the blood instead. ^[5] Tanya Agurs-Collins, PhD, RD, program director in the Health Behaviors Research Branch of the Behavioral Research Program at NCI, stated that obesity is associated with poor outcomes for cancer survivors. ^[6] The number of NCI obesity-related grants increased from a mean of 38 per year in 2015 to a mean of 59 per year in 2022. ^[7] Jeff Gigante, CEO of Next Level Brands Hospitality, reported that food, takeout, and catering sales are up, but beer sales are down. ^[8] Nate Siegel, co-founder of Willa's in Tampa, stated that the rise of GLP-1s and the 'sober curious' trend provides opportunities for new menu items, portion sizes, and zero-proof cocktail menus. ^[9] Tampa Bay restaurant owners are adjusting menus to include more non-alcoholic options and smaller portions to adapt to changing diner habits. ^[10] The rise in GLP-1 medications is causing diners to pull back on alcohol and high-fat foods because these drugs slow digestion and suppress cravings. ^[11] Most NCI obesity-related grants during the study period were categorized as research (62.4%), program project and center (12.4%), or research fellowship (10.3%). ^[12]
