A study led by scientists from Project Seagrass found that at least 18 million people in extreme poverty across the Indo-Pacific fish in seagrass meadows. ^[1] The research identified that 6.5 million people in the Indo-Pacific are entirely dependent on seagrass meadows for subsistence and fishing-related income. ^[2] The study simulated different turbine shutdown strategies and found that stopping turbines only during periods of high bird density relative to electricity production could prevent up to 90% of potential bird collisions. ^[3] Dr. Benjamin Jones, chief conservation officer at Project Seagrass, stated that seagrass loss is a direct threat to food security, livelihoods, and justice across some of the world's most climate-vulnerable coastlines. ^[4] Seagrass-dependent households earn 23% less than other fishers, according to the study data. ^[5] A study led by Silke Bauer analyzed data from 37 weather radars in Germany, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg to monitor approximately 42,000 wind turbines. ^[6] This targeted shutdown strategy would reduce annual energy production by only 1.2% to 7.6%, while other analyzed strategies would lose 2% to 20%. ^[7] The study estimates that on a single autumn night, about 188 million birds may cross European skies. ^[8]
