Mexican federal forces killed Luis Enrique Barragán Chávez, alias R5, during an operation in Los Reyes, Michoacán, on August 31. ^[1] Ronald Johnson, the US Ambassador to Mexico, stated on social media that Luis Enrique 'N' alias 'R5' has been killed and can no longer threaten communities. ^[2] The Secretary of National Defense reported that 'El Güicho' and an accomplice died at the scene during the operation. ^[3] The operation included elements of the Mexican Army and other security agencies and ended in an armed confrontation that killed several suspected members of criminal groups. ^[4] The US Department of State offered a reward of up to three million dollars for information leading to the capture of Alias R5. ^[5] US federal prosecutors charged Alias R5 in 2025 with participation in the production and distribution of narcotics destined for the US market. ^[6] Luis Enrique 'N' alias 'R5', also known as 'El Güicho', was identified as the leader of the Los Reyes cartel, a faction of Cárteles Unidos. ^[7] The Department of State offered a reward of 3 million dollars for information that would lead to the arrest of 'El R5'. ^[8]
