Indian regional carrier FLY91 placed a firm order for 40 ATR 72-600 aircraft valued at approximately USD 1 billion. ^[1] Nathalie Tarnaud Laude, chief executive of ATR, stated that India needs profitable regional airlines for sure, emphasizing that success in the aviation business depends on profitability. ^[2] ATR described the agreement as its largest firm order in almost a decade and the biggest ever placed by a regional airline. ^[3] Deliveries for the 40 ATR 72-600 aircraft are scheduled between 2027 and 2032. ^[4] FLY91 plans to expand its fleet from six aircraft to 60 over the next five years. ^[5] ATR estimates that about 4.6 billion trips take place annually between tier-2 and -3 cities in India, but only 3% are made by air, representing a huge untapped market. ^[6] Laude suggested that achieving the connectivity goals requires building more airports, supporting manufacturing to keep aircraft costs effective, and offering tax incentives or lower airport taxes. ^[7] Nathalie Tarnaud Laude said the Udan scheme has been helpful in increasing connectivity but might not be enough to achieve the target of 200-300 turboprops in 20-odd years without additional incentives. ^[8]
