Between 1998 and 2021, Mexico recorded 2,470 deaths caused by atmospheric lightning discharges, according to a study by researchers from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). ^[1] The State of Mexico concentrated the highest number of recorded deaths from atmospheric lightning discharges, followed by Oaxaca, Michoacán, and Guerrero. ^[2] The study, titled 'Mapping Lightning Risk in Mexico: Integrating Natural Hazard and Social Vulnerability', was conducted by Alejandro Jaramillo Moreno and Christian Domínguez Sarmiento of the Institute of Atmospheric and Climate Change Sciences. ^[3] In rural Mexico, the primary victims of lightning strikes are farmers and day laborers who cannot pause their work during rain due to economic necessity. ^[4] The State of Mexico recorded the highest number of lightning strike fatalities in the country, with high incidence in municipalities such as Toluca, Villa Victoria, San Felipe del Progreso, and Ixtlahuaca. ^[5] The study titled 'Mapping Lightning Risk in Mexico: Integrating Natural Hazard and Social Vulnerability' was the first national map to cross-reference storm frequency with socioeconomic vulnerability conditions. ^[6] Researchers suggest installing lightning rods and appropriate grounding systems, strengthening emergency medical services, and enabling safe shelters to mitigate the risk. ^[7]
