Novartis suspended eight clinical trials for an experimental therapy targeting autoimmune and neurological disorders at the end of August after the death of three patients. ^[1] Alexandra Sánchez stated that while multiple myeloma is incurable, new treatments have improved survival, with some patients now achieving 10 years or more of disease control compared to approximately five years a decade ago. ^[2] A Novartis spokesperson stated that the trials were suspended temporarily following the registration of severe immune responses in the three cases. ^[3] Novartis is conducting a thorough review of the observed safety events. ^[4] The company identified the fatal immune response as a known safety risk in CAR-T therapies, which modify patient immune cells to recognize and destroy cancer cells. ^[5] Experts estimate that more than 2,200 people are diagnosed with multiple myeloma annually in Mexico, and over 1,300 die from the disease each year. ^[6] Kevin Nacho identified the development of CAR-T therapies, which use genetically modified T lymphocytes, as a major pending challenge for Mexico and Latin America. ^[7] Kevin Nacho, medical manager of Hematology at GSK Mexico, stated that new targeted therapies and bispecific antibodies have changed the landscape of multiple myeloma treatment. ^[8]
