A study commissioned by Pesticide Action Network and published in the journal Frontiers in Public Health estimated that 402-433 million cases of unintentional acute pesticide poisoning occur among farmers and farm workers annually, based on data from 2006-2023. ^[1] The study estimated that approximately 46% of the world's 934 million farmers and farm workers are poisoned by pesticides each year. ^[2] The study estimated that 11,000 deaths occur annually due to pesticide poisoning, with nearly 60% of these deaths in India. ^[3] Researchers from the Pesticide Action Network (PAN) analyzed 214 publications from 2006 to 2023 alongside World Health Organization mortality data to estimate up to 433 million cases of unintentional acute pesticide poisoning annually. ^[4] South and Southeast Asia and eastern Africa recorded the highest estimated numbers of cases, with nearly 84% of farmers in Burkina Faso estimated to suffer acute pesticide poisoning each year. ^[5] The study estimated that approximately 46% of agricultural workers worldwide are affected by acute pesticide poisoning, with about 11,000 cases resulting in fatalities each year. ^[6]
