Federal forces in Michoacan engaged in a shootout with the Reyes Cartel during an early Sunday morning operation in the municipality of Los Reyes. ^[1] Luis Enrique Barragán Chávez, alias R5 or Wicho, was reported to have been killed during the operation, though official confirmation was pending. ^[2] Mexican armed forces killed Luis Enrique N, a suspected leader of the Reyes Cartel, during an operation in the municipality of Tocumbo, Michoacan, according to the Mexican Defense Secretariat. ^[3] Governor Alfredo Ramírez Bedolla confirmed the deployment of the National Defense Secretariat (Defensa), National Guard (GN), and Civil Guard of Michoacán to the scene. ^[4] The state prosecutor's office (Fiscalía General de Justicia del Estado) has not yet officially confirmed the death of R5 or reported any civilian casualties. ^[5] Luis Enrique N had a provisional detention order for extradition to the United States and was identified as a suspected coordinator of extortion in the Los Reyes area. ^[6] The Mexican military stated that soldiers were attacked with gunfire and retaliated, resulting in the deaths of Luis Enrique N, also known as R5, and one of his companions. ^[7] Michoacan has been plagued for many years by criminal violence from groups dedicated to drug trafficking and extortion affecting avocado producers. ^[8]
