Quebec's independent police watchdog, the Bureau des enquêtes indépendantes (BEI), announced that an officer with the Nunavik Police Service appeared in court to face charges of assault and assault with a weapon. ^[1] The Directeur des poursuites criminelles et pénales (DPCP) announced on September 2, 2026 that it will not lay criminal charges against Sûreté du Québec (SQ) officers for the December 10, 2025 shooting death of a woman in Saint-Hyacinthe, after reviewing the Bureau des enquêtes indépendantes (BEI) report. ^[2] The alleged assaults took place on August 26, 2025, in the village of Umiujaq, which is about 160 kilometres northeast of Kuujjuarapik. ^[3] The officer appeared in court in Kuujjuarapik, a town on the shore of Hudson's Bay in northern Quebec, on Monday, September 1, 2026. ^[4] The DPCP based its decision on the BEI report and concluded that the police officers' use of force was justified under sections 25(1) and 25(3) of the Criminal Code. ^[5] The DPCP concluded that the officers' use of force was reasonable and necessary because the woman posed a real risk of serious injury or death when she charged at them, and that the force was not excessive. ^[6] The DPCP stated that the woman said she would drop the knife only when paramedics arrived, and that when paramedics arrived they remained outside due to the knife risk; the woman then suddely ran at the officers with the knife. ^[7] A spokesperson for the BEI said the case is expected to go to trial. ^[8]
