The Central Bank of Russia reported that the total number of Visa and Mastercard cards in the country decreased by 25% during the second quarter (April to June). ^[1] Investigators found an abnormality rate of 13% among the embryos incubated on Mir, which was more than four times higher than the rate seen in the Earth-based control group. ^[2] NASA sent 30 fertilized Japanese quail eggs to the Mir space station in 1995 for a 16-day incubation experiment to study embryonic development in microgravity. ^[3] Dmitry Dubynin, head of the National Settlements Payment Center (NSPK), previously stated that foreign cards should be gradually withdrawn from circulation due to risks like magnetic stripe degradation and certificate expiration. ^[4] The issuance of domestic 'Mir' cards demonstrated positive dynamics during the same period. ^[5] Transaction activity on the remaining Visa and Mastercard cards in Russia continued to grow during the period reported. ^[6] Astronaut Shannon Lucid removed the eggs individually over 16 days and preserved the embryos in a chemical solution for examination upon return to Earth. ^[7] The space-grown embryos displayed visible abnormalities affecting their eyes, limbs, and beaks, including unusually small or defective eyes and twisted fingers. ^[8]
