Mixi Cruz, a survivor of human trafficking, was exploited by her stepsister in Cuautitlán Izcalli, Mexico, first for labor and later for sexual exploitation in luxury hotels in Mexico City. ^[1] Nayely Sánchez, head of UNODC Mexico programs, presented a study at the Castillo de Chapultepec identifying human trafficking as the third most profitable illicit activity globally. ^[2] Deputy Minister of Justice Stanimir Stanev welcomed representatives from the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and the Ukrainian Prison Service during their visit to Bulgaria. ^[3] The study detected 9,018 trafficking victims in Mexico between 2015 and 2025, with the tourism sector identified as a high-risk area due to mass mobility and labor informality. ^[4] The UNODC study reports a 25% global increase in trafficking victims between 2015 and 2025, with over one-quarter of victims being children and adolescents. ^[5] The main director of the Directorate General for Execution of Penalties (GDIN), Chief Commissioner Ivaylo Yordanov, highlighted the importance of international cooperation and partnership with UNODC for knowledge exchange and institutional capacity building. ^[6] The primary objective of the visit is to encourage professional dialogue and the exchange of experience in the field of deprivation of liberty, probation, and staff training. ^[7] The visit to the Samorano prison complex is part of a broader technical assistance program and institutional strengthening initiatives that UNODC is implementing to support the reform of the Ukrainian prison system. ^[8]
