The National Assembly of Nicaragua approved a constitutional reform on September 2, 2026, that extends the presidential term to seven years and prohibits political opponents from participating in elections. ^[1] President Daniel Ortega requested the reform, which extends the presidential mandate from six to seven years. ^[2] Gustavo Porras, president of the National Assembly, confirmed that the parliament approved the reform unanimously. ^[3] President Daniel Ortega and Vice President Rosario Murillo have governed Nicaragua with absolute power since 2007, following the 2018 protests that left over 300 dead according to the UN. ^[4] The reform excludes from elections those who participate in 'coup attempts', 'treason against the homeland', or request 'military intervention'. ^[5] President Daniel Ortega requested the constitutional amendment that extends the presidential mandate from six to seven years. ^[6] The Organization of American States (OAS) approved an urgent meeting of foreign ministers by initiative of the United States to debate sanctions against the Nicaraguan government. ^[7] Gustavo Porras, president of the parliamentary body, stated that the articles were approved unanimously during a special session in León. ^[8] The constitutional reform must be ratified by the second legislature, which begins in early 2027, and will apply to the current authorities elected by popular vote. ^[9]
