Approximately 65% of breast cancer patients in the Dominican Republic arrive with a diagnosis at advanced stages of the disease. ^[1] In the Dominican Republic, breast cancer incidence was estimated at 59.1 cases per 100,000 women in 2022, with a mortality rate of approximately 26.4 deaths per 100,000 women. ^[2] Azucena Reyes was diagnosed with stage 3B colon cancer at age 32 after doctors initially told her she was too young and did not fit the typical profile for the disease. ^[3] Early detection of breast cancer considerably improves treatment effectiveness, allows for less aggressive treatments, increases survival probabilities, and offers more therapeutic options. ^[4] Only about 43% of breast cancer cases in the Dominican Republic are detected in early stages (I and II), while 57% are detected in advanced stages (III and IV), according to data from the Swedish Institute for Health Research (IHE). ^[5] Research shows that while colorectal cancer is increasing in adults younger than 50 across all racial and ethnic groups, rates are rising fastest among Hispanic and Latino people in the United States. ^[6] Reyes experienced intense nausea and stomach pain in August 2015, leading to a tumor removal that was initially dismissed as non-cancerous because she was only 32 years old and Hispanic. ^[7] Two months later in October, the tumor returned, and Reyes was diagnosed with stage 3B colon cancer. ^[8]
