Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić said on 2026-09-05 that he is ready to accept the will of the ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) regarding a possible candidacy for prime minister. ^[1] Vučić said he will call early parliamentary elections on September 9 or 10, 2026. ^[2] Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić said in a statement to Serbian media that he would form a government with only 12 ministers if he becomes prime minister after the upcoming elections, calling it the smallest government in Serbia's history. ^[3] Milos Vucevic, president of the Serbian Progressive Party, stated at the same session that the party's Main Board had unanimously approved the decision to run with the list '', Aleksandar Vucic - Ujedinjena Srbija', with Vucic as the top candidate and our party's candidate for prime minister. ^[4] The SNS leadership decided that Serbia's President Aleksandar Vucic must act as the party's candidate for prime minister in the upcoming parliamentary elections. ^[5] Vučić proposed that the future government have at most 12 ministers, which he said would be the smallest government in Serbia's history but 'fast, efficient and strong'. ^[6] Vučić said that to become prime minister, he must first resign and step down from the presidency, because after his second presidential term he cannot run again per the Constitution. ^[7] Vučić said he would call elections within days, at the latest on September 9 or 10, according to his statement to Serbian media. ^[8] The Main Board of the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) committed to a session in the Serbian city of Niis to deliberate on the party's upcoming parliamentary election campaign. ^[9] The party resolved that Aleksandar Vucic will be the list's carrier (first candidate) on the upcoming election ballot. ^[10] Vučić criticized ministers for fighting over powers when laws on government and ministries are passed, saying they do not dedicate themselves to all the areas they are given. ^[11]
