An early morning fire on Chapman Lane in St Michael, Barbados, destroyed four homes, with residents becoming aware of the blaze around 3 a.m. ^[1] Troy Williams, former president of the Barbados Contractors and Artisans Association, urged officials to speed up urban redevelopment in Bridgetown following a major fire at Chapman Lane. ^[2] Lashley said at the scene that social agencies were being mobilised to provide support for the affected families. ^[3] Residents reported that the fire spread so quickly they were unable to save much of their belongings. ^[4] Williams emphasized that it is time to move from planning to action regarding the Bridgetown Redevelopment Master Plan, which includes proposals for taller buildings and new funding. ^[5] Williams stated that the city's old layout, with many wooden and stone buildings built close together, allows fires to spread quickly. ^[6] Williams warned that old buildings and crowded neighborhoods in Bridgetown put residents at constant risk of fire. ^[7]
