Justice Minister nominee Kim Seung-won denied any intention to order the withdrawal of criminal indictments against President Lee Jae Myung if he takes office. ^[1] President Lee Jae-myung stated on September 4, 2026, that the South Korean government will introduce a group accident insurance plan for military personnel starting in July 2027. ^[2] Kim Seung-won, a lawmaker of the ruling Democratic Party, faced criticism from the main opposition People Power Party over his involvement in a group of lawmakers calling for dropping Lee's criminal indictments. ^[3] President Lee Jae Myung faced multiple criminal trials before his presidential election in June last year, which were postponed as sitting presidents are exempt from criminal prosecution except in the case of insurrection or treason. ^[4] The criminal cases against President Lee are related to charges of making false statements ahead of the 2022 presidential election, corruption related to a development project undertaken during his time as Seongnam mayor, embezzlement of provincial funds during his time as Gyeonggi governor and subornation of perjury. ^[5] President Lee Jae-myung said that the new policy aims to prevent the recurrence of the phrase 'When rich, they are the nation's son; when injured, they are your son; when dead, who are they?' ^[6] The state will bear the insurance premiums for all military personnel covered under the new group accident insurance plan. ^[7] Veterans will receive public indemnity insurance for 18 months after discharge to cover medical costs without needing to prove a causal link between military service and the injury or illness. ^[8]
