Experts are examining a pistol found by tourists in Lake Annecy to determine whether it might have been used in the 2012 murders of a British family in the French Alps. ^[1] The 2012 Alps killings saw three members of a British-Iraqi family and a French citizen shot dead on a mountain road near the southern end of Lake Annecy. ^[2] French prosecutor Marie-Céline Lawrysz said in a statement that two tourists, reported to be British, found a semi-automatic pistol thought to be a Luger in Lake Annecy on 2026-08-20 at a depth of about five feet, a few dozen metres from shore, and handed it to gendarmes from the Saint-Jorioz brigade on 2026-08-21 after keeping it for 24 hours and conducting online research. ^[3] Saad al-Hilli, 50, his wife Ikbal, 47, and her mother Suhaila al-Allaf, 74, were shot dead near Annecy in September 2012; their two daughters, then aged four and seven, survived, and cyclist Sylvain Mollier, 45, was also killed. ^[4] Saad al-Hilli, 50; his wife Iqbal, 47; her mother Suhaila al-Allaf, 74 and French cyclist Sylvain Mollier, 45, were found dead on a mountain road. ^[5] The al-Hillis' two daughters survived the attack, with one aged four found hidden under the legs of her dead mother and the elder one, aged seven, shot in the shoulder and suffering a head wound. ^[6] Detectives have ruled out a contract killing, saying a professional killer would not have used such a vintage weapon as the Luger. ^[7]
