The Port of Churchill in northern Manitoba is loading approximately 30,000 tonnes of durum wheat supplied by Saskatchewan-based AGT Foods, its first grain shipment since 2020, with the cargo scheduled to ship to European customers in the week of 2026-08-31. ^[1] The Port of Churchill in Manitoba loaded its first grain shipment in six years in 2026, a cargo of approximately 30,000 tonnes of Canadian durum wheat from Saskatchewan, shipped to the Mediterranean aboard the FedNav bulker Federal Sprey (37,141 dwt). ^[2] Federal Northern and Arctic Affairs Minister Rebecca Chartrand said on 2026-08-31 that the shipment shows federal, provincial, municipal and Indigenous governments working together as 'Team Canada,' and alluded to the ongoing Canada-U.S. trade war. ^[3] The Port of Churchill and the Hudson Bay Railway are owned by OneNorth, a partnership of 29 First Nations and 12 northern communities, and are operated by Arctic Gateway Group following the federal government's 2018 deal transferring ownership from Denver-based OmniTrax. ^[4] War Lake First Nation Chief Betsy Kennedy said on 2026-08-31 that northern First Nations and communities are leading the way to take back control of the Port of Churchill and the Hudson Bay Railway, and that her grandfather and father worked on the railway and hoped the community would own it. ^[5] Officials said the Port of Churchill will ship over 100,000 tonnes of grain in 2026, with this shipment being the first of three grain cargoes planned, and predicted more in 2027. ^[6] The Arctic Gateway Group acquired the Port of Churchill in 2018 from U.S.-based OmniTrax with the goal of rebuilding operations, after the Canadian Wheat Board ceased operations in 2021 and the pandemic hurt the business. ^[7] The grain traveled to the Port of Churchill on the rebuilt Hudson Bay Railway, which had been failing and contributed to the end of the port's grain business. ^[8]
