Colombia's National Institute for Food and Drug Surveillance (Invima) issued Health Alert No. 267 of 2026, in which it identified 42 food and beverage products it said are being marketed with claims of being sports or nutritional supplements despite being authorized only as foods and beverages. ^[1] Ten Colombian meat processing and slaughter plants were audited by El Salvadorian sanitary authorities between August 24 and 29, 2026, to renew their sanitary habilitation for exporting beef. ^[2] Brazilian authorities have reported 83 deaths and more than 3,600 health complications associated with weight-loss products since 2018. ^[3] Brazilian customs officials seized more than 76,000 injection pens, vials, and other weight-loss products containing substances such as semaglutide and tirzepatide during the first half of 2026. ^[4] A technology hackathon organized within the GOFEST 2026 summit in Bogotá gathered 17 teams to develop solutions for improving drug evaluation processes at the Instituto Nacional de Vigilancia de Medicamentos y Alimentos (INVIMA). ^[5] Proper nutrition before, during, and after physical activity is essential for maintaining energy levels, reducing digestive discomfort, and aiding muscle recovery during hiking. ^[6] Invima recommended that consumers refrain from purchasing or consuming the listed products, and that those who already bought them suspend consumption and report any related situation to health authorities. ^[7] Invima said the irregularities were detected mainly on e-commerce platforms, where the products are promoted with claims of building or increasing muscle mass, improving physical performance, reducing fatigue, and aiding recovery after training. ^[8] In 2023, the El Salvadorian sanitary authority documented 12 benefit plants for exporting beef, cuts with or without bone, viscera, and edible offal, but they remained in 'In Process' status until the audits were completed. ^[9] The audits were conducted by officials from the Division of Inocuity of Animal Origin Products (DIPOA) of El Salvador's Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAG) to verify compliance with sanitary requirements. ^[10] Doctors described serious complications among patients who used weight-loss products obtained outside the formal health system, including one patient requiring intensive care after using a product purchased in Paraguay. ^[11] Reuters reported that compounded and smuggled products account for about 51% of Brazil's estimated US$7 billion weight-loss drug market. ^[12]
