The Indonesian Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries rescued three newly hatched false gharials (Tomistoma schlegelii) from a fishing settlement in Teredu Hamlet, Mempawah District, West Kalimantan. ^[1] The number of hotspots in West Kalimantan reached 7,377 on Monday. ^[2] An Indonesian military task force comprising personnel from the Army Special Forces, Air Force Special Forces, Army Strategic Reserve Command, and Marine Corps is using aerial surveillance and mapping to detect hotspots and identify the fastest routes to forest and land fires in West Kalimantan Province. ^[3] A specialist veterinarian's initial remote clinical examination found the rescued false gharial hatchlings in relatively good condition, but with remnants of their yolk sacs on their abdomens, which could cause infection if left untreated. ^[4] Local residents reported that crocodile eggs had hatched near the settlement in Teredu Hamlet and that the animals were at risk of being trafficked. ^[5] Indonesia is facing a sudden increase in forest and land fires across several parts of Kalimantan. ^[6]
