The Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network (GCRMN) published a report titled 'Status of Coral Reefs of the World: 2025' on Monday based on a comprehensive assessment of global coral reef status. ^[1] The report states that global coral reefs have lost 9.5% of their mass in the last four decades due to ocean warming, and mass bleaching events have accelerated since 2010. ^[2] Dr. Manuel González Rivero, lead author of the report, stated that climate change is driving more frequent and severe marine heatwaves while local pressures like poor water quality and overfishing make reefs less able to withstand them. ^[3] From 1980 to 2024, global hard coral cover has declined from an average of 30.2%. ^[4] The report draws on more than 40 years of global data from 21.1 million observations and 87,000 surveys across 124 countries, territories, and economies. ^[5] Dr. Manuel González Rivero, the lead author of the report, stated to EFE that the data confirms the coral ecosystem has not yet reached a point of no return and maintains its capacity for regeneration. ^[6] The GCRMN urges coordination of the Paris Agreement to limit warming to 1.5°C with strict management of local pressures such as overfishing, water pollution, and coastal development. ^[7]
