A bipartisan group of U.S. lawmakers sent a letter to the Army requesting an explanation for an order telling the 173rd Airborne Brigade to stop specializing in drone warfare. ^[1] The lawmakers stated that eliminating the specialized drone unit will limit the ability to learn from allies, particularly the Ukrainian Armed Forces, and hinder efforts to modernize drone warfare. ^[2] The request for a briefing was sent to departing Army Secretary Dan Driscoll and Gen. Christopher LaNeve, the Army's acting chief of staff. ^[3] Gen. Christopher LaNeve recently instructed the battalion to refocus on its core responsibility as an airborne infantry unit after Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth removed the Army's prior chief of staff, Gen. Randy George. ^[4] The 173rd Airborne Brigade, a unit of 600 soldiers formed in November, was constructing its own uncrewed aerial platforms and practicing combat tactics pioneered by Ukraine against Russia and Iran. ^[5] Lawmakers described the specialized drone unit as a prudent response to a moment when the character of warfare is changing faster than a conventional formation's ability to adapt. ^[6]
