Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova warned Japan of countermeasures after the deployment of US-made Typhon missile systems near Russian borders during joint exercises. ^[1] Russia condemned the joint military maneuvers between Japan, Australia, and the United States as a threat to its national security. ^[2] Russia formally lodged a complaint with the Japanese embassy in Moscow regarding the deployment of US Typhon missiles for the upcoming joint military exercises. ^[3] Moscow warned that it would take retaliatory measures aimed at ensuring an adequate level of national security in response to the deployment. ^[4] The Russian Foreign Ministry stated that the deployment of Typhon systems, designed to launch medium-and shorter-range missiles, poses a threat to Russia's security and is absolutely unacceptable. ^[5] The exercises will feature the US Typhon medium-range missile system for the first time, which is capable of launching SM-6 and Tomahawk cruise missiles. ^[6] The joint maneuvers, named 'Orient Shield', are scheduled to take place in Japan from September 8 to September 24 and will involve 3,700 personnel from the three participating countries. ^[7] The exercises will involve approximately 1,700 military personnel and will be a record for joint exercises involving Japan, the United States, and Australia. ^[8]
