The Commission for Telecommunications (CRT) published the General Guidelines for the Protection of Audience Rights in the Official Gazette of the Federation (DOF) to establish a framework for protecting audience rights without directly intervening in media content. ^[1] The Mexican Commission for Regulatory Telecommunications (CRT) announced that telephone lines ending in 1 that were not linked before August 31 will be suspended starting September 1. ^[2] The CRT stated that the new provisions do not intervene in journalistic work or editorial lines, but they require televiewers and radio listeners to exercise their rights through procedures for submitting observations, suggestions, requests, or complaints. ^[3] The new guidelines eliminated previous obligations or prohibitions against broadcasting false or decontextualized information, allowing media companies such as TV Azteca, Televisa, and radio stations to continue exercising their editorial independence. ^[4] The new guidelines establish an economic sanction scheme where fines can range from 0.01% to 1% of the licensee's revenue depending on the infraction, such as lacking an ethical code or an audience defender. ^[5] The suspension of unregistered lines will be executed within 72 hours following the August 31 deadline. ^[6] Users can reactivate their service immediately by completing the registration process with their mobile carrier, even if the line has already been suspended. ^[7] Users can also register in person at any customer service center of the corresponding telephone operator. ^[8]
