A magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck the western and central regions of Colombia on August 10, 2026, highlighting the vulnerability of public hospitals. ^[1] Juan Andrés Oviedo Amézquita, a structural engineer and former president of the Colombian Association of Seismic Engineering, stated that meeting seismic resistance standards does not guarantee a hospital remains functional after a strong earthquake. ^[2] Guillermo Herrera, the national manager of Camacol, held a meeting with representatives from the Colombian Association of Seismic Engineering, the Colombian Society of Engineers, and geotechnical experts to analyze building behavior during the earthquake in Cali. ^[3] According to 2022 Ministry of Health and Social Protection figures, 310 out of 378 essential public hospitals in high and intermediate seismic threat zones require structural reinforcement. ^[4] Of the 310 hospitals requiring reinforcement, 196 have no reinforcement, 114 have partial reinforcement, and only 41 are fully reinforced. ^[5] Preliminary analysis by experts indicated that the earthquake and conditions in Cali behaved within expected parameters based on seismic microzonification and the NSR-10 design standards. ^[6] Preliminary evidence suggests that some structures with 30 to 40 years of age that collapsed during the earthquake were not covered by current seismic resistance provisions. ^[7]
