A new study found that young adults who reduced or stopped using social media experienced significant improvements in sleep quality and reductions in anxiety levels. ^[1] John Torous, the lead researcher, stated that the benefits of reducing social media on anxiety and sleep are very real, even though the mechanism was not exactly as initially predicted. ^[2] Participants in the study were asked to drastically limit or stop using popular social media applications such as Instagram, TikTok, and X for a specific period. ^[3] The study revealed that reduced exposure to emotionally stimulating content, social comparison, and the fear of missing out (FOMO) were primary drivers of reduced anxiety, rather than just reduced blue light exposure. ^[4] Jamie Rivadeneira, owner of JapanLA, stated that the store was created 20 years ago to provide a safe space for adults to enjoy cute toys and collectibles. ^[5] JapanLA faced a hacking attack that shut down its website for a day, and trolls threatened to distribute fliers at the store's physical launch event. ^[6] JapanLA's business was turbo-charged by switching to TikTok Shop in 2023 after initially using Popshoplive during the pandemic. ^[7] Trolls spread rumors that JapanLA's owner supports Immigration and Customs Enforcement, leading the owner to scrub photos of her young daughter from social media. ^[8] Influencer Kayla Gardner documented a situation involving her boyfriend cheating on a cruise ship in four parts on TikTok. ^[9] Kayla Gardner's boyfriend left the cabin claiming to go get food, while his partner watched security camera footage on the cabin's television. ^[10] The boyfriend was seen on the security monitor on the upper deck with another woman. ^[11] The TikTok series regarding the cheating incident accumulated nearly 25.5 million views. ^[12]
