The Servicio Meteorológico Nacional (SMN) reported on September 3 that Mexico will experience marked thermal contrasts with freezing mornings in mountainous regions and extreme heat during the afternoon. ^[1] At the end of 2025, 10,878 bodies remained stored in morgues, representing an 8.3% increase compared to 10,450 bodies stored in 2024. ^[2] The National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi) reported that Mexican forensic services received 97,920 bodies in 2025, averaging 268 bodies per day. ^[3] Researchers at Mexico's National Autonomous University (UNAM) identified Estado de México, Oaxaca, Michoacán, and Guerrero as the states with the highest risk of severe consequences from lightning strikes, based on a combination of storm activity and social vulnerability. ^[4] Extreme heat is expected to affect the north of Mexico, the Pacific coast, the Gulf of Mexico, and the Yucatán Peninsula on September 3. ^[5] Temperatures between 35 and 40 °C are forecast for Baja California Sur, Durango, San Luis Potosí, Nayarit, Jalisco, Colima, Morelos, north and southwest of Puebla, Veracruz, Guerrero, Chiapas, Tabasco, Campeche, Yucatán, and Quintana Roo on September 3. ^[6] Temperatures between 40 and 45 °C are forecast for the northeast of Baja California, west of Sonora, northeast of Chihuahua, north and center of Sinaloa, northeast of Coahuila, north and east of Nuevo León, west and center of Tamaulipas, and south of Oaxaca on September 3. ^[7] Of the 90,445 identified bodies processed, 92.8% were returned to families, while 6,502 unidentified bodies were processed. ^[8] The number of unidentified bodies processed decreased by 22% in 2025 compared to 2024, with 48.7% of these remaining stored in morgues. ^[9] According to the UNAM research, Mexico's lightning mortality rate fell from more than 5 deaths per million inhabitants in the 1980s to about 0.3 deaths per million today, attributed to urban growth and migration of people from rural to urban areas. ^[10] The UNAM study found that rural communities are more vulnerable to lightning deaths because residents often work outdoors in agriculture and livestock, and they frequently lack adequate shelters, sufficient electrical protection in homes, and easy access to emergency medical services. ^[11] The UNAM study, citing data from Mexico's Secretariat of Health (Secretaría de Salud), reported 2,470 deaths in Mexico related to atmospheric electrical discharges between 1998 and 2021. ^[12]
