The Spanish Guardia Civil has reported that human trafficking mafias are recruiting immigrants expelled from Ceuta after the late July 2026 mass entry to carry cocaine into Spain aboard narcolanchas. ^[1] Admiral Juan Carlos Romay, Chief of the Argentine Navy, stated in an interview that the Strait of Magellan belongs to Chile. ^[2] Investigators are concerned that immigrants used as drug mules may act under pressure or economic necessity, making it difficult to determine whether their participation is voluntary, according to the Guardia Civil. ^[3] The phenomenon evidences the close collaboration between human trafficking and drug trafficking organizations operating on both sides of the Strait of Gibraltar, which use the same clandestine maritime routes to transport both people and narcotics, according to Guardia Civil sources. ^[4] The recruited immigrants do not pay for their clandestine crossing to the Spanish mainland but instead transport backpacks of cocaine provided by the trafficking organizations as payment for the trip, according to the Guardia Civil. ^[5] Gustavo Valverde, Chief of the Argentine Air Force, claimed in a YouTube interview that the Strait of Magellan is part of Argentina's sovereignty. ^[6] The Argentine Foreign Ministry issued a statement establishing the validity of the 1881 and 1984 treaties which confirm Chilean sovereignty in the strait. ^[7] Admiral Romay described the South Atlantic as a strategic region containing the main bioceanic passages connecting the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. ^[8]
