From Thursday, the restriction tying an individual's immigration status to a specific sponsor will be lifted if they receive a positive 'conclusive grounds' decision formally recognizing them as a victim of modern slavery through the national referral mechanism. ^[1] Officials stated that if an employee is found to be a victim of modern slavery, they will be allowed to work for any employer for the remainder of their visa. ^[2] The UK Home Office announced that care workers, chefs, and others at risk of losing migration status under post-Brexit rules will be helped by new visa changes if they leave an exploitative employer. ^[3] On September 3, the UK Home Office announced a new measure allowing skilled workers to change sponsors and continue working for the remainder of their existing visa if they are recognized as victims of modern slavery. ^[4] Under the scheme introduced by Boris Johnson's Conservative government in 2021, the migration status of people on skilled worker visas was tied to a sponsoring employer. ^[5] Previously, the UK's post-Brexit sponsored work system tied a worker's immigration status to a specific employer, leaving them at risk of losing their status if they could not quickly secure another approved sponsor. ^[6] The government said the protection will cover care workers, chefs, hospitality staff and others who entered the UK legally but subsequently faced exploitation. ^[7]
