The Delhi High Court sought the Wrestling Federation of India's response on Tuesday to quash disciplinary proceedings initiated against wrestler Vinesh Phogat. ^[1] The Delhi High Court issued a notice on September 1, 2026, seeking responses from the Centre, the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), and the Indian Olympic Association on a petition by wrestler Vinesh Phogat. ^[2] Wrestler Vinesh Phogat, who gave birth to a child in July 2025, filed a petition seeking a structured framework to facilitate the return of women athletes to competitive sports after pregnancy and maternity leave. ^[3] Phogat's lawyers, including senior advocate Rajshekhar Rao, submitted that the WFI failed to comply with the high court's July 6 direction to decide the May 9 show-cause notice within two weeks. ^[4] The disciplinary proceedings against Phogat were initiated pursuant to show-cause notices alleging indiscipline, violations of anti-doping regulations, and misconduct during the 2026 Asian Games selection trials. ^[5] The same bench issued notice in a separate petition by Phogat seeking implementation of a fair framework for women athletes returning to competitive sport following pregnancy and childbirth. ^[6] According to the plea, the eligibility criteria relied on performances in tournaments held during her maternity period, effectively penalising her for an absence over which she had no control. ^[7] Ms. Phogat sought directions for the formulation of a fair and structured framework for women athletes returning from maternity, transparent and objectively verifiable selection and nomination processes, as well as an alternative mechanism for athletes disadvantaged by maternity-related absences. ^[8]
