The Gun Violence Archive, based in Washington DC, reported that 8,698 people have died and 16,106 have been injured by gun violence in the United States so far this year. ^[1] Magali Porto reported her 13-year-old daughter, Charlottes Palacios Porto, as missing in Medellín on August 13 after she was under the protection of the Colombian Institute for Family Welfare (ICBF). ^[2] The ICBF confirmed that the adolescent is alive and under a protective measure adopted preventively by a Family Defender's Office to guarantee her integrity and rights. ^[3] As of August 31, the Gun Violence Archive recorded 736 child deaths and 1,998 child injuries among the victims of gun violence. ^[4] The Gun Violence Archive counted 31 police officer deaths and 207 injuries, including the death of Officer Mario García in the Bronx. ^[5] The Small Arms Survey, an independent research project based in Geneva, Switzerland, estimates that approximately 393 million firearms are owned by US civilians. ^[6] Magali Porto described finding her daughter dressed as a prostitute and under the influence of drugs, and reported being assaulted by bystanders while trying to intervene. ^[7] The mother stated she received a photograph identifying her daughter in the streets of central Medellín, where she allegedly operated in a structure dedicated to the recruitment of minors for sexual exploitation in the El Bronx sector. ^[8]
