The Clinic of the School of Medicine at the University of Puerto Rico (RCM-UPR) will not be able to attend to 503 patients scheduled for Thursday, September 4, due to the extension of a strike declared by the Workers' Union. ^[1] The UPR Workers Union initiated a strike on Tuesday morning across ten of the eleven university campuses, representing a dispute over the medical plan selected by the student body. ^[2] Víctor Ramos, the Secretary of Health for Puerto Rico, stated on Tuesday that the suspension of external clinics at the University of Puerto Rico (UPR) during the strike is unacceptable. ^[3] Lcda. Mónica Molina Salas, the executive director of the clinic, stated that striking employees are responsible for maintenance, cleaning, and handling biomedical waste in the facility located in the Reparto Metropolitano shopping center. ^[4] On Tuesday, 474 appointments had to be rescheduled, and on Wednesday, 463 follow-up patients were seen but 13 scheduled outpatient surgeries could not be performed. ^[5] The clinic provides unique high-complexity sub-specialized services, including oncology, neuro-ophthalmology, and various pediatric clinics, serving an average of 450 to 650 patients daily from Puerto Rico, the Caribbean, and other jurisdictions. ^[6] The suspension of clinics at the Reparto Metropolitano location of the UPR School of Medicine affects patients who have been waiting four, five, or six months for appointments. ^[7] Víctor Ramos criticized the strike organizers for using patients as leverage to advance their demands, noting that this is the second time in his four-year term that a clinic has been halted during a strike. ^[8]
