The UN secretary-general's report, 'Promoting the social and solidarity economy for sustainable development,' finds that the social and solidarity economy (SSE) has received greater legal, policy and institutional attention in recent years, but warns that progress in translating commitments into effective implementation remains uneven. ^[1] US President Donald Trump stated on September 1, 2024, that South Korea did not help in a potential war with Iran and warned them to remember this. ^[2] The report documents national initiatives, including Brazil establishing a national solidarity economy policy and system, Spain adopting comprehensive legislation on the social economy and co-operatives, India adopting a national cooperation policy in 2025, Saudi Arabia adopting its first national strategy for the co-operative sector, Türkiye adopting a co-operative strategy for 2025-2029, and Indonesia setting a target of establishing, developing or revitalising 80,000 village and urban community co-operatives. ^[3] The report says these developments built on the momentum of the International Year of Cooperatives 2025, and notes that in December 2025 the UN General Assembly encouraged continued implementation and exchange of practices and called for an International Year of Cooperatives to be proclaimed every 10 years after 2025. ^[4] In a Fox News interview on August 30, 2024, Trump claimed the US spends billions helping allies like NATO and South Korea, but these nations refused to participate when asked to help with Iran. ^[5] The South Korean government stated it is reviewing practical and military contribution plans for the Strait of Hormuz while considering North Korean defense posture and domestic legal procedures. ^[6] Trump noted on August 19, 2024, that South Korea imports 60% of its oil through the Strait of Hormuz but refused to assist him regarding Iran. ^[7]
