Researchers at Oregon State University and Portland State University published a study in Communications Sustainability identifying leaded aviation gasoline as a dominant source of lead pollution near regional airports. ^[1] The study collected tree moss from neighborhoods near the Hillsboro and Troutdale, Oregon, airports to measure lead levels, finding concentrations as much as seven times higher near the airports than in moss in other areas of Portland. ^[2] On 2026, researchers surveyed 100 members of the UK House of Commons and found that MPs underestimated public support for climate policies, pegging support for a consumer product environmental tax at 14.9 percentage points less and for home energy efficiency grants at 7.1 points less than recent polling results indicate. ^[3] Lead is a highly toxic metal that can cause developmental delays, difficulty learning, and behavioral issues in children. ^[4] MPs who perceived the product tax as less popular among fellow parliamentarians were also less willing to promote it, again regardless of their own opinions, illustrating a 'spiral of silence'. ^[5] The MPs overestimated the gap between Labour and Conservative voters on climate policy, judging a 25 percentage point difference on support for insulation and product tax policies when the actual spread was 12 percent. ^[6] The same study found that MPs overestimated public opposition to home energy efficiency subsidies by about three-fold and to the consumer product tax by almost two-fold, compared with actual poll results. ^[7]
