The National Audit Office (NAO) reported that the UK government has not done enough to prepare the food supply system for shocks caused by the climate crisis, disease, and cyber-attacks. ^[1] Britain relies on overseas imports for more than a third of its food, most of which enters through four ports: Dover, Felixstowe, Southampton, and London Gateway. ^[2] The NAO found that Defra had taken some steps to prepare for future shocks but had not done enough in recent years to get citizens and industry to plan for possible emergencies. ^[3] Dame Angela Eagle advised UK households to stock up on food to be more resilient before emergency services can reach them during extreme weather events. ^[4] Environment Secretary Dame Angela Eagle said the UK is about to experience probably the largest El Niño ever seen, which will lead to drier summers, wetter winters, and more extreme storms in the UK. ^[5] The National Audit Office (NAO) warned that Britain's food supply chain is vulnerable to plant or human disease outbreaks, cyber-attacks, and extreme weather, and that disruptions could push up prices and leave vulnerable people struggling to buy food. ^[6] The UK government plans to unveil an emergency preparedness strategy by the end of 2026, including advice on stocking food and water, to bring the UK closer in line with European countries. ^[7]
