A study commissioned by the European Parliament's Environment and Public Health committees identified the Bucharest-Ilfov region as having the highest average concentration of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) among over 230 European regions analyzed. ^[1] Romania recorded 136 premature deaths per 100,000 inhabitants attributable to PM2.5 exposure in 2023, ranking as the second highest rate in the European Union after Bulgaria. ^[2] The average concentration of PM2.5 in the Bucharest-Ilfov region was 16.2 micrograms per cubic meter in 2023, which is more than three times the World Health Organization's recommended limit of 5 micrograms per cubic meter. ^[3] The European Union plans to introduce a new fee for small parcels ordered online starting November 1. ^[4] Five European nations agreed to build return hubs outside the EU to deport illegal migrants. ^[5] Cardiovascular diseases account for 72% of the disease burden associated with fine particles in Romania, including 40% from ischemic heart disease and 32% from stroke. ^[6] Customs services processed approximately six billion packages ordered online during 2025. ^[7] More than 90 percent of the processed packages originated from China. ^[8] The new measure is primarily aimed at curbing the large influx of cheap goods from China. ^[9] German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt stated that agreements with the third-party host countries should be finalized by the end of the year. ^[10] The participating countries are Germany, Austria, Greece, Denmark, and the Netherlands. ^[11] The specific countries that will host these return hubs have not yet been named. ^[12]
