The National Weather Service issued a Heat Warning for all of Puerto Rico from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. due to high heat indices reaching up to 106 degrees Fahrenheit. ^[1] The DuSable Lake Shore Drive bridge in downtown Chicago remained stuck in the raised position for more than four hours on Wednesday, September 2, 2026. ^[2] A heat warning is currently in effect for all of Puerto Rico from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. due to high temperatures combined with humidity. ^[3] Temperatures are expected to reach a maximum of 91°F today, with heat indices potentially reaching 106°F. ^[4] The National Weather Service reported that scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected this afternoon, with the heaviest rainfall occurring over the interior and western parts of Puerto Rico. ^[5] Authorities warn that a general low risk of rip currents does not eliminate the possibility of potentially deadly currents near breakwaters, jetties, reefs, and piers. ^[6] Rainfall is expected to increase by Friday due to the passage of a weak tropical wave that will increase the probability of showers over Puerto Rico. ^[7] Scattered showers are expected today, primarily between noon and 3:00 p.m., with a 30% probability of rain and temperatures peaking near 91 degrees Fahrenheit. ^[8] The NWS indicated that high temperatures combined with humidity could produce heat indices reaching up to 106 degrees Fahrenheit, especially in coastal and urban zones. ^[9] The NWS warned that high temperatures can worsen symptoms in people with chronic conditions and increase the risk of heat-related illnesses for those without sufficient refrigeration or hydration. ^[10] Erica Schroeder stated that high temperatures in Chicago caused bridge components to expand enough to prevent the two bridge leaves from fully closing. ^[11] Erica Schroeder, a spokesperson for the Chicago Department of Transportation, stated that the bridge became stuck during a scheduled lift to allow a boat to pass underneath around 10 a.m. ^[12]
