Archaeologists discovered a human skeleton inside a large Roman storage jar, known as a dolium, at the site of the ancient colony Deultum in Bulgaria. ^[1] Dr. Ivaylo Pervanov, an ethnochoreologist at the Institute of Ethnology and Folklore with the Ethnographic Museum at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, is leading a project to digitally archive traditional dance. ^[2] Archaeologists found remains of a fire around the dolium, including ash, charcoal, broken bricks, roof tiles, fragments of melted glass, and bones of domestic animals. ^[3] Ljudmil Vagalinski, the leader of the excavation from the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, stated that the individual likely sought shelter inside the jar during an enemy attack by Eastern Germanic tribes or Huns. ^[4] The skeleton was found on August 10 inside a late Roman tower at the Deultum site, which was exposed to numerous attacks by Eastern Germanic tribes and Huns during the 4th and 5th centuries. ^[5] The research team recorded the 'Ora Pasholuy' tradition in Sofronievo, a ritual dance performed after Easter to commemorate the deceased. ^[6] The research team utilizes a system with 119 synchronized inertial sensors to record the movements of a group of seven dancers simultaneously. ^[7] The mobile laboratory travels to villages to record elders in their natural environment rather than in sterile studio settings. ^[8]
