The Monroe County Land Authority and the Monroe County Sheriff's Office removed 640 pounds of debris from conservation lands in Key Largo, Florida, in the latest cleanup of an illegal encampment. ^[1] With the latest removal, the cumulative total of debris removed from conservation lands in the Upper Keys has reached 32,960 pounds. ^[2] Casting for Cats, a nonprofit organization, is seeking 12 cats to star in its 2027 Catlendar. ^[3] Lawrence Lopez, Assistant Land Steward, said in a statement that the cleanups take a tremendous amount of physical effort and help restore sensitive hardwood hammocks while improving conditions for the surrounding community. ^[4] The cleanup targeted an illegal encampment located deep within a hardwood hammock in Key Largo, requiring crews to carry the debris a considerable distance through the forest. ^[5] Participants may post their favorite cat photo on the Casting for Cats Facebook page or tag @castingforcats on Instagram and use the hashtag #cfcatlendar2027. ^[6] The casting call closes on September 7, and the 12 winning cats will be unveiled during the Casting for Cats Kickoff on October 16. ^[7] The organization is inviting cat lovers throughout the Keys and beyond to submit photos of their favorite felines for a chance to be featured. ^[8]
