Scientists Rebecca Cole and Rakan Zahawi conducted an experiment in March 2018 at the Sabalito Biological Reserve in southern Costa Rica to test the impact of coffee pulp on degraded land. ^[1] Two years after the experiment began, native trees covered more than 80% of the treated area. ^[2] The nonprofit organization Turtle Love established a volunteer program in Playa Tres, Barra de Parismina, Limón, Costa Rica, to protect sea turtles nesting in the Caribbean. ^[3] The study documented a significant increase in soil carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus levels in the treated area compared to the untreated control. ^[4] The team covered 1,400 square meters of dry land with a half-meter layer of coffee pulp, while an adjacent plot remained untreated for comparison. ^[5] The daily fees are set at US$90 for stays between 3 and 14 nights, US$84 for 15 to 30 nights, and US$66 for stays exceeding 30 days. ^[6] The program allows volunteers without prior biological experience to participate in conservation efforts for green, leatherback, hawksbill, and loggerhead sea turtles. ^[7] Volunteers must perform nocturnal patrols lasting up to five hours to monitor nesting and prevent illegal egg extraction and poaching. ^[8]
