Governor Jenniffer González Colón announced on Tuesday a temporary pause in the water rationing plan for subscribers of the Carraízo reservoir. ^[1] Researchers from the United States Geological Survey (USGS) are presenting a new hybrid modeling proposal designed to improve the monitoring and prediction of floods in river headwaters. ^[2] Subscribers in zones 1 and 2 included in the rationing plan will receive water service during the pause period. ^[3] The Carraízo reservoir returned to the 'observation' level after rainfall associated with the remnants of Hurricane Dolly affected eastern Puerto Rico. ^[4] The water rationing pause will begin on Wednesday and will last for at least 48 hours, with the possibility of extending to 72 hours. ^[5] Scientists are integrating next-generation satellite remote sensing networks to monitor surface water in complex basins, allowing analysts to observe steep mountainous or dense forested areas that are inaccessible on foot. ^[6] The USGS aims to expand its environmental observation networks by combining community-based data collection programs with the installation of cameras and sensors in remote geographic zones. ^[7] USGS experts are developing sophisticated digital models that integrate multivariable climate data to simulate surface runoff, define snow accumulation dynamics, and quantify groundwater storage. ^[8]
