California's Consultation Lake is a secluded high-elevation destination located along the Mount Whitney Trail in the eastern Sierra Nevada. ^[1] California Department of Fish and Wildlife crews and local fire departments responded and spent several hours extracting the bears, using harnesses or ropes and, in some versions, a sedative for the mother. ^[2] On August 28, 2026, hikers near La Verne, California heard howling from a water cistern in the San Gabriel Mountains and approached it out of concern. ^[3] The bear family was checked for injuries, reunited, and released at an undisclosed location within their home range, a standard practice to avoid habituation. ^[4] The hikers found a mother black bear and two cubs trapped inside the cistern, having entered for water but unable to climb the steep walls. ^[5] A permit is required to travel the route to Consultation Lake year-round, with quotas of 100 day hikers and 60 overnight campers in effect between May 1 and November 1. ^[6] Anglers are required to purchase a sport fishing permit from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife's website, as no on-site permits are available at the remote location. ^[7] The lake covers 33 acres of cool water and is home to rainbow trout, brown trout, and California's native golden trout. ^[8]
