A remodeling of a staircase inside an apartment in Altos de Santana, a Rogelio Salmona building in northern Bogotá, began circulating on social media and sparked a public controversy about the limits of transforming protected heritage. ^[1] María Elvira Madriñán, president of the board of the Fundación Rogelio Salmona, said that what was especially worrying was not only the transformation of the protected work but the attitude of boasting about having eliminated the element as if destroying heritage were an achievement. ^[2] María Elvira Madriñán, wife of architect Rogelio Salmona and president of the Rogelio Salmona Foundation, condemned the unauthorized demolition of a building in Altos de Santana, Bogotá. ^[3] Altos de Santana, a Salmona work in northern Bogotá, was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural at district level by Resolución 2043 de 2010, so modifications require prior authorization from the competent authority and must respect the values that justified the protection. ^[4] The Instituto Distrital de Patrimonio Cultural (IDPC) said that the stair intervention would have been carried out without the required authorization and that the responsible parties did not file a request for authorization. ^[5] A private firm demolished original stairs in an apartment building declared a Cultural Heritage of Interest (BIC) in Bogotá, citing dark and cold structural conditions. ^[6] María Elvira Madriñán stated that without protection, the architectural memory of the city disappears along with the buildings. ^[7] The District Institute of Cultural Heritage confirmed the demolition intervention was illegal and opened a sanctions process against the executing firm. ^[8]
