A new breed of AI-aligned SuperPACs is spending millions of dollars to get pro-AI data center candidates elected in the 2026 midterm elections. ^[1] Annenberg Public Policy Center polling of 1,320 U.S. adults conducted between June 16 and July 19 found that 61% opposed new data centers in their area, up from 49% in a February and March survey. ^[2] Build American AI announced on Monday that it will spend millions of dollars on advertising campaigns in Kansas, Ohio, and Wisconsin to defend data center construction. ^[3] A new group called Build American AI has emerged to run pro-AI and pro-data center ads in key battleground states of Kansas, Ohio, and Wisconsin. ^[4] Nvidia has set up NVPAC to shape policy in its own favor, given its enormous stake in AI technologies and hardware used in most AI data centers. ^[5] The Trump administration argues that to remain a global power ahead of China, AI cannot be slowed down and is being integrated into every arm of the military and all aspects of law enforcement. ^[6] Data Center Watch counted 75 projects worth roughly $130 billion blocked or delayed in the first quarter of 2026, a pattern lenders have started pricing as credit risk. ^[7] The National Republican Senatorial Committee warned AI companies that the issue is turning toxic, pointing to Ohio where Democratic Senate candidate Sherrod Brown has made it central to his campaign against Republican Senator Jon Husted. ^[8]
