A new maritime connection between Punta Arenas and Puerto Argentino was contracted with the Chilean shipping company Eastern Island to operate starting in November, aiming to reduce navigation time by half compared to the route via Montevideo. ^[1] The CECIM La Plata and the Argentine Association of Environmental Lawyers filed a lawsuit against Rockhopper and Navitas alleging environmental and sovereign damage to halt the Sea Lion project. ^[2] The local fishing sector, a primary economic activity, is facing a crisis due to a collapse in the Loligo squid population, leading to the closure of the second fishing season and estimated losses of US$350 million. ^[3] The Sea Lion oil project, located in the North Malvinas Basin and developed by Rockhopper Exploration and Navitas Petroleum, received a final investment decision in 2025 for the first phase costing approximately US$1.8 billion. ^[4] Damen Shipyards Group is calling for public-private investment in shared maritime charging points, shore power, and energy hubs to accelerate the maritime energy transition. ^[5] Damen Shipyards Group showcased three advanced vessels at the World Port Days event in Rotterdam, including the fully electric tug Aqua Pollux and the electric waterbus Blue Amsterdam, to highlight maritime electrification. ^[6] Martin Bloem, Vice President at Damen Shipyards, said at World Port Days that the first emission-free vessels are already in operation and the challenge is to move from pilots to large-scale deployment. ^[7] Damen Shipyards Group wants the European Emissions Trading System (ETS) to be extended to workboats, with revenues reinvested in the sector's transition. ^[8]
