The Colombian Geological Service (SGC) identified a seismic swarm in Colombia following a magnitude 7.4 earthquake that struck on August 10. ^[1] The magnitude 7.4 earthquake that struck San José del Palmar, Chocó, on August 10, 2025, at 7:34 a.m., was the most devastating earthquake in Colombia during the current century, causing building collapses and hundreds of deaths. ^[2] The main earthquake event occurred at 7:34 a.m. on August 10, 2026, with an epicenter in San José del Palmar and a depth of approximately 103 kilometers. ^[3] The initial earthquake on August 10 had a magnitude of 7.4 and caused a rupture of approximately 120 kilometers within the Nazca plate. ^[4] The SGC estimated that the energy released by the August 10 earthquake was equivalent to between 125 and 130 atomic bombs like those used in Hiroshima. ^[5] Between August 10 and the end of August, the National Seismic Network of Colombia (RSNC), operated by the Colombian Geological Service (SGC), recorded 1,340 earthquakes in the Chocó department. ^[6] The energy released by the August 10, 2025, magnitude 7.4 earthquake in Chocó is equivalent to between 125 and 130 Hiroshima atomic bombs. ^[7] The SGC identified a seismic swarm consisting of more than 900 earthquakes concentrated in Sipí, Istmina, Medio San Juan, and Litoral del San Juan, occurring at shallow depths between 30 and 60 kilometers. ^[8] The SGC states that the presence of a seismic swarm does not allow for predicting the occurrence of a larger magnitude earthquake or its timing. ^[9]
